The monthly topic throughout May was on Music and Sound. The children experimented with playing percussion instruments, made their own guitars, tambourines and shakers, learnt about how sound can be changed from loud to quiet; from quick to slow, they listened to each other’s favorite pieces of music and enjoyed meeting real musicians who came to share their own music with the children!

Marian Hancu (LittleImpro) came with a keyboard: the children learned that musical accompaniment is the instrumental piece of a song. Marian explained the difference between a classic piano and an electronic keyboard and discussed why the piano keys are black and white. The children shared their own favorite song from different genres (rock, nursery rhymes, country) and some felt brave enough to come and sing along at the microphone. The session ended with the children being a choir and singing “What a wonderful World”!

Alexandru Iancu from Urban Events arranged for 3 musicians to visit Rainbows and Early Explorers with a violin, bouzouki (Greek guitar) and clarinet. The musicians introduced the name of each instrument describing what it’s made of, its parts and how it’s played (eg. blowing, plucking). The children learned that being musician is a job that requires lots of practice but most of all passion. Each guest played a piece of music (solo) and at the end they played together, offering the children the chance to hear how individual sounds can make a beautiful song when combined.

Rainbows and Early Explorers had a great time in a drum workshop led by Mihai Axinte! The children experienced the difference between blues, rock’n’roll, hip-hop and classical rhythms; they moved their body according to how the music made them feel, experienced playing as part of a band and enjoyed taking a turn to be a real drummer!
