Last week we began our new topic for March, which is on Changes, starting with Changes in the Weather.

Baby Acorns learnt the song What is the Weather Today? and signs from EYSL for the words associated with this time of year: sun, rain, yellow, green, blue, cold, warm etc. They used headphones to listen to sounds of nature such as the rain, bird song, the wind and named the sound that they could hear. They made clouds by spraying shaving foam onto a tray of water and then dropped food colouring onto the clouds and watched it come through into the water; they made cards for their mummies and played with coloured ice cubes in warm water, watching what happens as the ice melts and colours the water.

Shiny Stars dressed up in Spring clothes, named them and discussed why coats, boots, rainhats are needed at this time of year followed by a sorting activity in which the children matched the clothes to either a winter or spring symbol. They also sang ,,5 little speckled frogs” and ,,Spring is Here”. In creative Shiny Stars made a flower basket, paint a flower using their hand prints, made an umbrella craft and painted on a long piece of paper hung vertically, using eye droppers to drip rain which they watched falling down the paper.

Rainbows linked the weather to their feelings, linking a sunny day to feeling happy and a stormy day to how we feel when we are cross; they watched a time lapse clip of “a year on planet earth” and then matched weather pictures to the right season. In Jolly Phonics they learnt the letter sounds g and o while in maths they compared the height of flowers and added petals to flowers according to the number rolled on a dice. In creative they used cut out handprints to be the petals on a large flower, they created a cherry blossom tree and used straws to blow the paint around on a rainy day painting.

Early Explorers began their week by writing about their weekend and then reading “the news” to the rest of the group. After discussing the season of Spring, they practiced reading and writing words using the letters ‘ng’ (ring, wing, strong, kangaroo etc). At the end of the week before the children created their own fairy tale, with each child contributing their own idea to the story and this week they wrote the end and then drew pictures to illustrate the different parts of the story. In maths they continued working on addition and subtraction on a number line while in creative they created a flower basket and drew real hyacinth flowers.
